Rangers select Washington State product Jared Prince in the 34th round

SPOKANE, WA – The Texas Rangers completed the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft today, selecting a total of 51 prospects from high schools and universities across the country over the last three days. The Rangers drafted a couple players with Northwest ties for the second day in a row. Washington State University outfielder Jared Prince was taken in the 34th round by Texas. Prince led the Cougars to a NCAA Tournament appearance this season and only had one error in his four year, 222 game career. Cabrillo College (Aptos, Calif.) freshman Taylor Vail was selected by the Rangers in 40th round. Vail, an infielder, is a native of Wenatchee, Wash.

Of the 51 selections, 25 were high school prospects and 25 were college prospects. The remaining selection, Tanner Scheppers, was drafted last season by the Pittsburgh Pirates but did not sign. Scheppers then played for the St. Paul Saints of the American Association before entering the draft again. He was a member of the 2008 College World Series Champion Fresno State team.

The Rangers will assign players to Spokane sometime in the next week before they’re required to report on June 16th for a three day mini-camp. Workouts are June 17th (7 p.m.), June 18th (1 p.m.), and June 19th (1 p.m.). All workouts are open to the public and free of charge.
