Spokane, WA - The Rangers announced today that they have assigned Jake Skole, the 15th overall pick in the 2010 MLB First Year Player Draft, to the Spokane Indians. Drafted in the first round, Skole was the Ranger's compensation pick for failing to sign 2009 first round pick, pitcher Matt Purke.
Skole was a two-sport star at Blessed Trinity High School, in Roswell, Georgia. He excelled at baseball as well as football, turning down a scholarship to Georgia Tech for both sports to sign with the Rangers.
Skole missed almost his entire senior season in baseball because of an ankle injury. He came back late in the season, and performed well in the last two weeks of the season. In 14 games he hit .452, with six home runs and 21 RBIs. The Rangers are looking at Skole as a future centerfielder with a combination of speed and power.
Considered to have five-tool potential, Skole has drawn comparisons to Cleveland Indians centerfielder Grady Sizemore and Detroit Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon.
Skole will join fellow first rounder Michael Olt in Spokane. The Indians currently have six of the Rangers first twelve draft picks from the 2010 Draft.
The Indians have been assigned the Texas Rangers' first round pick six out of the eight years they've been affiliated. John Danks played in Spokane in 2003, Eric Hurley and Thomas Diamond in 2004, John Mayberry in 2005, Kasey Kiker in 2006, and Tommy Hunter in 2007.
The Indians return to Avista Stadium this Sunday, July 4th for 4th of July Fireworks Night presented by Comcast as they take on the Boise Hawks for a three game series. Plenty of good seats remain and are on sale now at the Avista Stadium Ticket Office or at any TicketsWest location.
